Gift of Magi
DATE: 24.11.2025
Jim: A young man,
deeply in love with his wife, Della.
Della: A young woman, equally in love with
Jim, who wants to give him a gift for Christmas.
Setting: A small, modest apartment. It's
Christmas Eve. There’s a simple Christmas tree in the corner, dimly lit by a
few candles.
(Della
is sitting on the floor, her hair hanging loose around her shoulders, counting
the money she has saved. Jim enters quietly, wearing his overcoat.)
Jim: (surprised) Della, it’s late. What are you doing
up?
Della: (sighing, a bit nervous) I... I’ve been thinking.
Christmas is tomorrow, and I still haven’t gotten you a gift. I want to give
you something special.
Jim: (smiling, sits beside her) you’re all the
gift I need, Della. You don’t have to—
Della: (interrupting quickly) No. I want to get you
something. Something you’ll love. You’ve given me so much. I... (pauses) I know
you’ve been working so hard, and I know it’s been tough.
Jim: (looks at her, concerned) Della, please, we
don’t need anything more. We’ve got each other. That’s enough.
Della: (holding up a small bundle of coins) I’ve
been saving for months. I’m going to buy you something... something worthy of
you. But I need money for it.
Jim: (sighs softly) you’re too generous, Della. I
don’t need anything. Not from you.
Della: (suddenly stands up, determined) I’m going to
do this, Jim. I’ve decided.
Jim: (confused, stands up) what are you going to
do with the money? We’re barely getting by. We need it for other things, Della.
Della: (smiling, but with a touch of sadness) I’ll
sell my hair.
Jim: (shocked, grabs her arm) what? No, Della.
Your hair? You can’t—
Della: (softly) I can. It’s the only thing of value
I have left. It’s long, it’s beautiful... It’s the only thing I can give you.
I’ll sell it and buy you a gift you’ll love. Something that will make you
happy.
Jim: (takes a step back, his voice wavering)
Della, your hair... I can’t let you do that. That’s part of who you are.
Della: (with a small, determined smile) It doesn’t
matter. You’re what matters. (pauses) I know how much you’ve always admired my
hair. I want you to have something precious from me.
(Della
exits, leaving Jim in a daze. A few moments later, she returns, her hair now
cut short, and she’s holding a small wrapped box.)
Della: (smiling) I sold it. (hands him the box)
Merry Christmas, Jim.
Jim: (eyes wide, but struggling to hide his
emotions) Della, you... (Takes the box, opens it slowly) A watch chain... (His
voice cracks) You sold your hair for this?
Della: (softly, smiling) I thought it would look
perfect with your watch. I know how much it means to you.
Jim: (choking back tears, holding the chain in his
hands) Della... I—I don’t know what to say. But I can’t accept this.
Della: (confused) Why? You don’t like it?
Jim: (quietly) No, I love it. But... I sold my
watch to buy the combs you wanted for your hair. (he looks at her, his eyes
wet) I gave up my most prized possession. And you gave up yours.
(They
sit in silence for a moment, their sacrifices hanging between them.)
Della: (whispering, fighting back tears) we’re
fools, aren’t we?
Jim: (holding her hand, voice trembling) fools for
love. And I wouldn’t want to be anything else.
Moral: The moral of The Gift of the Magi is
centred around selfless love, sacrifice, and the irony of life. It
teaches that true love isn’t about material gifts but about
the depth of one’s sacrifices for the happiness of the other person. Here's a
breakdown of the key moral lessons:
